SEN. KONNI BURTON APPLAUDS GOV. ABBOTT’S LATEST POLICY ROLLOUT
Brings focus to serious issues and need to continue funding for the testing of sexual assault evidence kits
Colleyville – Today, Sen. Konni Burton attended a press conference with Governor Greg Abbott to unveil his new plan to combat sexual assault, sexual harassment, and human trafficking. Upon reviewing the plan, Sen. Burton released the following statement:
“I am pleased to join the Governor for the second time this year to talk about serious policy ideas in advance of next session. Just a few weeks ago, I joined the Governor in Tarrant County to talk property tax reform, and today, I join him to talk about serious efforts to combat sexual crimes and achieve better outcomes for victims.
As a legislator who focuses on criminal justice issues, I am pleased to see attention on protecting the innocent and vulnerable, and preventing the victimization of children. I am particularly pleased to see a continued commitment to fund the testing of sexual assault evidence kits. One of the most basic rights we afford to victims of sexual assault is a thorough forensic medical examination within 96 hours of the crime. We must ensure that any evidence collected is appropriately processed and used to bring justice to the victim in a timely manner.
I look forward to working on these items as part of the next session and ensuring we continue to have a criminal justice system which prioritizes victims and produces the best outcomes for our society.”
