Burton Wants to Include Population Plus Inflation Reform in Spending Cap Discussion

(Austin, TX) Friday, Senator Burton commented on the recent proposal to amend the state’s Constitution to adjust how state spending counts towards the spending cap. The proposal, SJR 3, is designed to allow the state to pay down debt and cut taxes without having these expenditures count against our constitutionally mandated cap.

“Any and all conversations that involve changing how we count spending in this state must include capping all government spending at population plus inflation. This is a policy our Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and many in the Senate campaigned on last year. I can see the benefits to allowing debt payments and tax cuts to occur above our spending cap, but only if that spending cap is the one Republicans were overwhelmingly elected on to implement.” commented Burton.
