Hot Take: New Year, Same Great Product

The Texan will turn SIX this year! Smack dab in the middle of the sure-to-be-wild 89th Legislative Session.

When my husband Phil and I first launched The Texan, we wanted to fill the niche that’s been desperately avoided by so many outlets: giving you the facts about newsworthy events and Texas politics without the spin and opinion that’s infected the news business.

This will be our third full session in existence and a lot has changed since April 29, 2019 — but our commitment to quality, objective reporting has not. Our team and our offerings to subscribers has grown, but the nuts and bolts remain the same.

So, THANK YOU to everyone who has supported The Texan, whether from the outset or along the way. We quite literally could not do this without you!

We have a saying in the newsroom: just as our product is geared toward quality and not quantity, so, too, is our audience.

Of course, we want as many subscribers as we can possibly get (try us out now for less than $10 per month!). But we don’t peddle in click bait headlines and our reporters are not activists with an agenda — both of which are cheap and easy ways to build followings, but neither of which inform Texans with unbiased and factual political news.

We are in the news business to report critical policy issues impacting Texans and their pocketbooks at the federal, state, and local levels but without the narratives and spin that is so pervasive in news media today.

I’m proud to say that we’ve cultivated that, and it’s thanks to all of you who read along every day.

When we first launched, it was a goal of mine to be a go-to read for elected officials, politicos, and everyday Texans each morning. I’ve lost track the number of stories I’ve heard from people who say just that!

But as with any audience, complexity is a feature. And that’s why we’ve branched out to provide as much variation in our content as possible — all rooted in that just-the-facts foundation. Our newsletters and additional podcasts have been a hit, and those will continue on during the session!

We’ve also planned another big kickoff event to preview the session. Mark your calendars for January 28 as our reporters will host panels and one-on-one interviews with lawmakers, discussing the important policy items the chambers will debate this year.

You won’t want to miss it!
